So, I remembered why I broke the 15 minute mile the first time. There was a marine boot camp training. They would jog in their boots and vests and every now and again stop and do some exercise or sparring. There were at least 3 groups of 10. They would pass me then I would pass them while they were doing their exercising. At one point half of them lined up on one side of the trail and the other half on the other side of the trail. They were facing each other with their arms outstretched towards each other and were squatting up and down. I felt awkward walking between them and I'm sure that I was blushing and the marine on the end started chanting, "All hail, all hail." I started really blushing, but at least now I was smiling too. Any ways, they kept me going.
On the way back there was one marine that wasn't cutting it and I actually passed him. He should be ashamed. I really didn't think he'd let an old lady like me pass him. (Granted, I wasn't wearing boots and doing squats and stuff every now and again.)
I hit the trail again on the 4th of July. I felt great! I rested a day. The first mile was done in 14 minutes, the next 5 miles were all 15 minute miles. I was actually calculating how I could work up to jogging 5 of the miles before the end of the summer. I was even thinking about bringing Chrissie and EJ out to leisurely walk it a second time later that day. (They keep telling me they want to go, but then back out when I try to wake them up before 7.) I noticed when I got to the car that the Velcro on my ipod arm band had rubbed me raw and I was bleeding under my arm. I thought that was a funny new sports injury and looked forward to telling you guys about it. I got home, still feeling great, thankfully Chrissie was still asleep or I would have told her about my plan to hit the trail again. I started to get undressed for my shower that I desperately need any time I tackle the trail whether or not I get my 15 minute miles. I took my shoe off and the whole toe of my sock was bloody. I thought, "That's not good. This is not nearly as funny of a sports injury as my ipod injury." So I gingerly took my bloody sock off and found that even though it looked like all my toes were in trouble there was only one toe that was bleeding. I had broken a toenail and what was left of the toe nail cut the tip of my toe off. I have a high tolerance for pain, but you would think I would have noticed that my feet were hurting more than they usually do. I have a half dozen blisters on my hands and feet, so I have gotten used to ignoring some things. (It's fine now. Don't worry.)
The next day I burned 1000 calories on the eliptical machine and the tread mill because I was going to a cook out and wanted the freedom to eat guilt free and the sock was only bloody where that specific toe was and today it didn't bleed at all. I haven't done the trail this week not because I'm wising up, but because the weather has been iffy and I don't want to get struck by lightning or walk in the rain for as much as 3 miles. I am going to conquer that trail. I really want to be jogging it by the end of the summer.
Marcella is still as sweet as can be, but she has a dark side. When I saw her this week she asked if I had any pain from or previous session and I said, "No, but I could tell I had worked out." So we started our session. She put more weight on the squatting machine than she did before. I thought, "Ok, I guess I'm not a level one beginner any more." Then she ordered me to do 4 sets of 20 instead of 3 sets of 15. When I was done I asked her, "Is pain the goal?" She smiled a sort of evil smile (I never saw her do that before), then proceeded to give me the work out of my life. Each time she asked me to do something that I wasn't sure that I could do she would have that same evil smile. I don't know if that was something I was seeing psychologically or if she actually did have a different smile that day. It wasn't too bad, but my biceps were slightly sore the next day. Hopefully, that will be enough to make Marcella happy on Saturday when we have our next session. :)
